Reading this article from the herald today reinforced what we have recognised at Stanley Avenue School for some time. Whilst mathematics, reading and writing skills are extremely important, there is also far more to it than that........ Research completed shows: That students who gained Level 2 didn't necessarily have better arithmetical, reading, writing or problem-solving skills at 14 than those who gained only Level 1. Instead, they had "higher levels of perseverance, communication, social skills, curiosity and self-management".

Our vision of the Stanley Avenue not only promotes these dispositions, skills, values and knowledge but encourages students to be aware of and set goals toward developing these attributes. Our teaching then focuses on what we can do to set students up for success.

It is excellent to see an article that reflects the whole learner.

Learning to Learn

Last Week our lead team met with Michael Pohl with a very important focus. What is important for our students to learn? Our vision of the Stanley Avenue Learner outlines the skills, dispositions, values and knowledge that we believe are essential for our students in their futures. We looked at the school wide themes that drive our curriculum and investigated potential topics and creative ways to ensure our learning tasks are rich, relevant and engaging. Opportunities over the holidays

It was wonderful to be invited to speak at two events during the holidays. The first was the First Time Principals conference in Auckland. This three day event for beginning principals from around the country is exceptionally well run, and I always get something out of it whether I was attending or speaking. As this was the second time I have been able to speak I took the school's vision and concentrated on how we have utilised technology (particularly in the way of the School's LMS and M Learning) to enhance learning opportunties for our staff and students.

Then on Friday Geoff Booth (DP), two of our senior students and I flew down to Wellington to speak to the Ministry of Education about how the School has utilised Ultranet, our school's LMS. This was an amazing opportunity to share how our Stanley Avenue Learner has been enhanced by creatively using the School's web-site. It was great to be recognised by the Ministry for the vision and hard work over the last three years.

It is wonderful to see that Project Energise's latest review on the programme’s effectiveness has produced such wonderful results. As one of the small group of School’s to begin the trial 5 years ago Stanley Avenue School has noticed the positive effects of regular physical activity and healthy nutritional choices for many years. Three years ago our whole school community agreed by adding hauora as one of our Stanley Avenue Learner Dimensions.

Our feeling is that it is when a child has a sound base of physical and emotional well-being they are in a far better position to have fun and learn at School. A big congratulations to the project energise team and a special thanks to Janine Gilmore who was our School’s facilitator throughout this time.

M Learning Conference

Today I was privileged to be invited to attend a 'Mobiles in Schools' conference held at the Vodafone headquarters at the Viaduct Basin. This conference, led by an independent facilitator had a wide range of experts speaking including representatives from Netsafe, the Human Rights Foundation, Vodafone, Two Degrees and some amazing educators.

It was exciting to have such in depth conversations about the future of M Learning in education focussing on potential benefits and risks to manage. I hope I have the opportunity to continue learning from this group that we can translate to Stanley Avenue School's vision. Some of the wonderful speakers that contributed to the day included:

Construction begins!

Stanley Avenue School is entering a very exciting phase. After the neogiations, planning and fundraising two major constructions now have the green light.

The MPR is now being completely refurbished to allow it to be used for a wide range of purposes. The access road is now been put in to ensure large machinery is going to be able to gain access to the back field to construct the gymnasium.

Inter-School Mathematics Problem Solving Day

On the 19th of May nine teams of students went to Te Aroha Primary to represent the School at the annual Interschool Maths Challenge.All teams were given 40 minutes to answer 25 problems. The teams were given one problem at a time and could answer of pass it. Stanley Avenue teams performed to a very high level. In the year 7/8 competition Stanley Ave One came first (with 24 out of 25)and Stanley Ave Two came second (with 23 out of 25). In the year 5/6 competition Stanley Ave One came second.Congratulations to all that participated. It was tremendous to see how much fun and enthusasim problem solving brings!

Skype connecting School's

I walked into a class today to see a group of student's conversing with a group of students at Rototuna Primary in Hamilton over a video call using Skype. This was an excellent example of technology enhancing the Stanley Avenue Learner. It was interesting to hear the students talking about their learning and experiences.

Todays ANZAC Day assembly was an amazing experience. To see children from 5 to 13 listening intently to Chief Officer Martin and their House Captains showed the level of respect we have at this School. The minute silence was still and reflective and the House Captains read their poems with poise and true leadership. I look forward to seeing students at the Te Aroha ceremony on Sunday.

I was really interested to read this article during the holidays. Looking at how the students are taking to using our Ultranet page I am not surprised at the outcomes that they suggest.
Technology boosts literacy skills

Children who blog, text or use social networking websites are more confident about their writing skills, according to the National Literacy Trust.

A survey of 3,001 children aged nine to 16 found that 24% had their own blog and 82% sent text messages at least once a month.

In addition 73% used instant messaging services to chat online with friends.

However, 77% still put real pen to paper to write notes in class or do their school homework.

Of the children who neither blogged nor used social network sites, 47% rated their writing as "good" or "very good", while 61% of the bloggers and 56% of the social networkers said the same.

"Our research suggests a strong correlation between kids using technology and wider patterns of reading and writing," Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust, told BBC News.

"Engagement with online technology drives their enthusiasm for writing short stories, letters, song lyrics or diaries."

Mr Douglas dismissed criticisms about the informal writing styles often adopted in online chat and "text speak", both of which can lack grammar and dictionary-correct spelling.

'Love and kisses'

He said that children needed to learn to distinguish between different writing styles but that in his opinion it was no different from learning when to end a letter "yours sincerely" or "yours faithfully" - and when "love and kisses" would be acceptable.

However not all teachers share the view that encouraging children to spend a lot of time online in the classroom has its advantages.

"Most primary school teachers are doubtful about hooking children up to computers - especially when they are young," said John Coe, general secretary of the National Association for Primary Education.

"They see enormous advantages in the relationship between teacher and child. Sometimes the computer is closer to the child than the teacher by the age of 13."

Mr Coe said he was in favour of using computers for research purposes in classrooms and that he agreed that all forms of communication helped young people to develop core literacy skills.

"Young people aged nine and upwards are texting like crazy - inside and outside the classroom," he said.

"It is a form of reading and writing. It might not be conventional but they are communicating, so there is a general gain."

He added that the NAPE was looking into ways in which this passion for texting might be incorporated into teaching methods.

End of Year Picnic

Over the next few weeks I intend to 'catch up' with the events of the last few weeks. It has been a little hectic to say the least!!

Today the whole school enjoyed a trip to WaterWorld at Te Rapa. It was a wonderful day designed to celebrate a year of learning and fun. It was great to see students from year 0-8 enjoy time together. Thanks to the large amount of helpers who made the day so much fun!

Waikato Full Primary Athletics

Yesterday I had the pleasure of accompanying twelve Stanley Avenue Students to an athletics meet held at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton. Over 40 schools from the greater Waikato region brought athletes to participate. Each of our students represented the School will talent and pride. 2009 saw some amazing results. Our students received three of the top four trophies with Meg Skilton, Taine Sweeney and Kerrod De Boer winning top overall athlete in their age groups.
Taine Sweeney- 1st 800m and 1500m
Meg Skilton- 1st 200m, 800m, 3rd Long Jump, 3rd Shot-put
Kerrod De Boer- 1st Long Jump, 2nd 100m, 2nd 200m
Campbell Millward- 1st 200m
Maddie White- 4th 1500m, 4th 800m

Stanley Avenue School went on to win the top overall school at the event. Meg set a record for the 800m and Kerrod a record in the long jump.

Stanley Avenue School Mural

During the course of this year the School has benefitted from our special group of year seven and eights. These students have been committed to making a difference within our School. A leadership camp at the beginning of the year led to a range of electives being formed.

Mrs Hayes facilitated the group, asking questions, prompting and guiding the sutdents. This involved wriitng letters to sponsors, generating ideas, through to the creation of an amazing mural.

Yesterday we unveiled the mural. Each student spoke briefly about the mural, and what it meant to them. Thank you to Mrs Hayes, the students and the sponsors for making this dream a reality.

Waikato Full Primary Cross Country

On Wednesday Stanley Avenue School sent a team of ten to the Waikato Full Primary Cross Country Competition. The results, like the weather were stunning. Stanley Avenue School students took out three of the four individual trophies with Meg Skilton, Taine Sweeney and Maddie White winning their year level. These results were backed up by an outstanding run by Campbell Millward (who came third), Ashley Haddon (13th), Luke Jerkovich (19th) and solid team performances from Maya, Christian and Carlos.

These are results to be very proud of as each race had up to 100 competitors from Schools from all over the Waikato region. Well Done!

Enviro Schools progress

Things are moving quickly with the class gardens. During the last few weeks Mr Hadden has come in and helped us with building the gardens. As this has happened the other classes has been deciding what they would like to plant in the garden. As each class has chosen their vegetables, it is going to be their class responsibility to look after their vege. Each class has 14 little pots filled with their vege. Room 1 is growing radishes, Room 2 is growing cherry tomatoes, Room 3 is growing beans, Room 4 is growing peas, Room 5 has carrots,Room 6 is growing tomatoes ,Room 7 is growing cucumbers, Room 8 is growing corn, Room 9 is growing capsicums and room 10 is growing celery.

BEST seminar

Last weekend Lisa, Kerry and Kevin presented at the BEST seminar in Rotorua. This seminar looks at innovative ideas in teaching and learning. Over the past year this blog has highlighted many of the innovations that have sprung from the Leadership camp held in March. Lisa's presentation concentrated on how we have encouraged our senior school to make a difference to our School and community.

Kevin and Kerry's presentation concentrated on their journey in using Web 2.0 technologies to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for their students. I have included their presentation with their permission.

Edible Gardens
The Enviroschool Group are pleased to report that we have been kindly donated some timber and labour from Aaron Haddon and Bunnings for our Edible Gardens project.

The group have been busy designing what these gardens will look like, and interviewing classes about what they would like to plant in their gardens.

We are hoping to get the project underway next week.

Winter Olympics- From the Team

Last week our team of 35, Year 7 and 8 students travelled to Totara Springs in Matamata to take part in a four day Sports Camp - "Winter Olympics". The camp involved 8 teams from full primary schools competing in a range of sports from major codes such as Netball and Rugby to minor sports such as Darts and Indoor Bowls.

Stanley Avenue School had a very successful week with outstanding results... We came home with 12 trophies and managed to defend our title of Overall Winning School. We were winners in Rugby, Netball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Caged Soccer, Indoor Bowls, Kayaking, Cross Country, Indoor Hockey and Indoor Soccer. We were runners up in Swimming, Hockey, Draughts and Athletics.

Once again our Cross Country runners showed a great deal of class with team members coming in 1st to 4th. Taine Sweeney followed in his brother Kurt’s footsteps taking out the race. Taine also went on to win Overall Outstanding Athlete of the camp which means he was noticed and nominated by teachers from all schools attending. This is an amazing feat considering Taine is a Year 7 student. We are very proud of Taine and his achievement.

In addition to the sporting trophies, we were also thrilled to win the Cheer Trophy this year. The team worked really hard last term to create a professional and effective cheer which they performed superbly on the night. Special thanks to Lisa Cavanagh who worked alongside the team on the cheer and for all the time and effort she has put into Winter Olympics teams over the past 8 years.

Throughout the week we learnt a lot about self management, teamwork, sportsmanship and team spirit. We played our hearts out and gave everything 100% both on and off the field. Mrs Horan and Mr Rae were overwhelmed by the good behaviour, positive attitude and maturity of our team members. We believe that it is what contributed to their great success, resulting in us winning the overall trophy for the second year running.

We would like to thank Rochelle Forrest and Dan de Boer (Camp Mum and Dad for the week) as well as those who supported us through our fundraising, by coaching our teams and by coming to encourage us on the sidelines.

Bridging the home/school gap

New Entrant Pack for Stanley Avenue School

Last weekend the Herald ran an article titled ‘Kids lack basics on first day at school.’

The article stated that many 5-year-olds are starting school unable to count or complete the alphabet, despite years of pre-school education. It also mentions that students do not know the difference between a letter and a number and some do not know how to hold a pencil.

Staff at Stanley Avenue School have been aware of this trend, and have been working with members of the PTA investigating ways to bridge the gap between home and school.

Next week we will be handing out our first new entrant pack to prospective parents. This pack includes a book bag sponsored by the PTA, a notebook, exercise book, pencil and eraser sponsored by Piako Stationery Suppliers, a lovely book for parents to read with their child, an alphabet card, a guide for forming letters and holding a pencil and a number line. Included in the pack is a new entrant booklet which gives guidance for parents on what to expect at Stanley Avenue School.

The School will monitor its start dates for children and the delivery of the pack will be organised approximately six months before your child starts school.

WINTER OLYMPICS 2009

Last week I visited the Stanley Avenue Winter Olympic Team over two days of their week long camp. During that time I was amazed at the teamwork, support, care, enthusiasm and pride for the School that all displayed.

This week was the culmination of many months practice, fundraising and organisation from the 35 students, teachers and parents involved.

For the second year in a row Stanley Avenue won the overall school!! Over the next week I will post some photos and video of this amazing achievement. Well Done Team. You have made us all so proud! Whaia Kia U- Strive to succeed!!!

TE AROHA COMMUNITY SPORT & EVENTS CENTRE

THE PROPOSAL

For many, many years people in the Te Aroha community have dreamed and talked and speculated about having a sport and events facility big enough to accommodate a full-size basketball and indoor netball court which Te Aroha doesn’t currently have. Imagine an indoor facility for sport – netball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, badminton, roller hockey … in our backyard !

Now we have an opportunity to make this happen.

Stanley Avenue School has been granted $400,000 towards ‘non-teaching space’ by the Ministry of Education. After due consideration the school Board of Trustees has decided it would like to see the funding go towards a full-size indoor court community sport and events facility that would benefit all of Te Aroha. The only stipulation by the Ministry is that the facility be built on the school grounds.

The proposal is to build the community sport and events centre alongside Stanley Ave’s existing sports turf at the front of the school so that it is easily accessible for community use, and has car-parking already available.

To do this, the school plans to shift its existing multi-purpose hall and the existing adventure playground. A big project, but with great potential for our town.

To build a full-size indoor court community sport and events centre in Te Aroha, based at Stanley Ave School, to accommodate and foster indoor sport and community events for all our youth.

OBJECTIVE

The proposed sport and events facility building will measure around 35m x 21m, with the addition of the school’s existing multi-purpose hall alongside it to provide toilet, kitchen and administration facilities.

While the $400,000 grant from the Ministry of Education is a substantial amount of money, initial estimates suggest around $1 million will be required to realize the dream of a full-size indoor court community facility.

One school cannot do this alone. We are now seeking community support for what will be a community resource. We want it to be an asset for the town, for all Te Aroha youth of both today and tomorrow.

Based on the guesstimate of $1 million, Stanley Ave School believes it can fund half of the project - around $500,000 - which includes the Ministry of Education grant together with $100,000 of its own school funds. In addition the school has provided for relocation of its Multi-purpose Room and junior school playground which it will fund from its own property budget.

That leaves around $500,000 that needs to be raised in the community.

We are hoping the Matamata-Piako District Council will contribute towards that shortfall.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR?

􀂃 Stanley Ave School has appointed a Project Manager who has designed some initial concept drawings showing possible locations within the school grounds.

􀂃 A sub-committee has been established, comprising representatives of the school’s Board of Trustees, Parent Teacher Association and staff. The role of the sub-committee is to establish community support for the project. If this is forthcoming, representatives from the community will be brought in as part of the sub-committee to take the project to its next stages. We want this to be a community achievement.

􀂃 An approach has been made to the Matamata-Piako District Council for funding towards the project but Council has asked for more community consultation to be carried out before it determines whether financial support will be forthcoming.

􀂃 We have now entered the community consultation phase.

This term, during Wednesday afternoon’s year seven and eight students have been taking part in a leadership elective. Students have been able to choose a group in work with. Options include making a difference to our environment, developing the School’s website, designing a gym for the School, taking jump jam with the junior students, selecting sports equipment for the School, working in classes to help with learning, designing a mural for the School, music on the marimba and organising fundraising opportunities. It has been wonderful to see these students so passionate about their learning and making a difference to others in the School. We look forward to sharing some of the exciting initiatives in the near future.

The exciting challenges ahead

Today whilst watching the roofers work on rooms five and six I contemplated the exciting challenges of term two. During the holidays Edtech have been busy making improvements to our School network. This will allow teachers and students wireless access with the support from our netbooks supplied by Cyclone computers.

Why is this exciting?

Effective teaching with ICT's can lead to:
- Enhanced student interest, engagement and learning achievement.
- Provide opportunity to develop true lifelong learners.
- Enliven Teaching practice.
- Support School organisation and evidence based decision making.
- Enhance communication between home and school.

I am looking forward to sharing exciting developments on the impact of student learning.

This term has been an exciting term for the teachers, students and community of Stanley Avenue School. Leadership camp for the year seven and eight students (which has led to leadership initiatives), A beach trip to Waihi for the junior School which included a visit to Waihi Beach School and Bowentown, and finally a overnight camp for rooms 10, 3 and 4. This camp included a trip to a marae, top town events and a day around Te Aroha meeting with the Mayor, going to the museum, a trip on the paddleboat, visiting the fire station and the library.

Whew!!!!

All of these events link into our learning about the environment. I can't wait to see the thinking that comes from these superb events. A huge thank you to the range of people that have assisted to make this term a wonderful one.

Last Friday, Stanley Avenue School received some very exciting news. We received a letter from the Minister of Education Anne Tolley informing us that we have been given $396,000 to build a hall/gym. This is stunning news for the school, students and community. Over the next few weeks we will form a committee which will investigate issues such as location, facilities and visit other Schools to look at best (and worst) practice. I am hoping this group will involve PTA, BOT, staff and students.

A shared vision of the Stanley Avenue Student

In 2022 students who started this year at Stanley Avenue School will be entering the workplace or beginning university.

We can only guess as to what life will be like for them then. We cannot know for sure what knowledge our students will need to best prepare them for the future. What we do know however is that they will need to become life-long learners, able to adapt to the future changes which will inevitably have an impact on their lives.

Today a form is attached to this newsletter asking for your view on what you believe your child should know, do, be and how they should relate to others when they leave Stanley Avenue. Students have discussed this in class and filling in this sheet at home will be part of their homework for next week.

Please take the time to sit down as a family and have a chat and fill in this sheet together.

This is the first step toward creating a truly shared vision for the Stanley Avenue Student.

A group of teachers, parents and students will then summarise this information which will be shared at our first community meeting early in term two. If you would like to be part of this group please contact Heather at the office.

Fun filled days + no sleep = LEADERSHIP CAMP!

Wow! What an amazing three days. Day one saw 65 year 7 and 8 students climb Mount Te Aroha. This journey, completed in three groups took from 4 hours (school gate to mountain and back) to 7 hours. Every student achieved their goal. Persistance, support, encouragement and large amount of perspiration! Day two each group completed eight rotations. These rotations concentrated on conflict resolution, team building, decision making and co operation. The night finished with no ball rugby a swim and the inaugural quiz night. Day three everyone was inspired by our range of guest speakers Tony Hope, Matthew Cooper and Dave Mac Calman spoke about leadership. Powerful messages emerged from the talks:

Everyone has the capacity to be a leader- You have opportunities every day.
Start with a dream. Then set SMART goals along the way.
Life is a challenge. It is your attitude that determines how you deal with it.

This afternoon the head boy and girl from Te Aroha college are visiting to speak. Both Teal and Sara are ex Stanley Avenue students. They are going to talk about their journey from Stanley Avenue to Te Aroha college and the lessons they have learnt.

Leadership camp 2009

Tomorrow morning I am joining year seven and eight students on a tramp to the top of Mt Te Aroha. This is the first challenge of many facing them over the next three days. They will be faced with co operative games, conflict resolution activities and a chance to reflect on what it means to be a leader.

On Friday we are fortunate to have a range of guests visit us to talk about what leadership means to them. these people include Matthew Cooper, Annah Stretton, Dave MacCalman and the head boy and girl from Te Aroha College (who are ex Stanley Avenue Students).

Students will then be given the support to create their own leadership goals and plan, and consider how their actions can impact positively on the rest of the School.

I look forward to sharing the stories and achievements from camp (and hopefully the view) from the top of the Mount Te Aroha. Watch this space!

Athletics days are always special events. I have always enjoyed the opportunity to see students outside of the classroom. The School's motto 'Whaia Kia U'- Strive to succeed was evident in watching the events. Thank you to all those parents that assisted in running events and that can to support the students. Learning to learn

Unfortunately I was unable to attend Guy Claxton's address at the university this Friday due to commitments to the ERO visit. However I delved into the notes that I have taken previously and put them together. Food for thought.....Guy Claxton author of 'What's the Point of School', a book that examines why our current school system is failing so many children and how we might put it right.

Claxton's first priority is to create enthusiastic learners who can thrive in our complicated world.'Learnacy', he believes is more important than literacy and numeracy'.

Guy Claxton believes that teachers need to focus on how they relate to students in their classrooms. What is important , he writes, are the values embodied in how they talk, what they notice, the activities they design, the environments they create, and the examples they set day after day. These represent the culture of the class.

Every lesson invites students to use certain habits of mind, and to shelve others. The 'key competencies' ( or 'dispositions'), he says, are not a whole new thing but are an attempt to prioritize the 'habits of mind' young people are going to need to thrive in the 21stC. For some teachers, he continues, 'key competencies' are merely making explicit what they already do.

In his book 'Whats the Point of School' he outlines what good learners do (as against being a 'successful' students). He has sorted the dispositions of good learners into what he calls his magnificent eight'.Teachers need to encourage all of them.

1 Powerful learners are curious. They are born curious and are drawn to learning. They wonder about things, and know how to ask productive questions. They enjoy the process of wondering and questioning. Curious people, however, can be demanding and skeptical of what they're told.

2 Confidant learners have courage. They are not afraid of uncertainty and complexity. They have the confidence to say, 'I don't know?' - which is always a precursor to, 'lets find out'. They are willing to take risks and try new things. They 'stick' with things and 'bounce back' when things go wrong. They also know when to give up. They have 'mental toughness' or resilience.

3 Powerful learners are good at exploration and investigation they like finding out and are good at seeking and gathering information. They take the time to attend carefully and do not jump to conclusions. They are good at 'sifting' ideas and trust their ability to tell 'good evidence'.

4 Powerful learners requires experimentation. This is the virtue of trying things out to see if it works, or just to see what happens. They make mistakes, keeping what works for 'next time'. They like adjusting things, enjoy admiring their work in progress, and seeing how they can continually improve things. They say, 'lets try'...and, 'what if?' And they also know the importance of practice.

5 Powerful learners have imagination. They know how to use their 'inner world' to explore possibilities. They know how to make use of 'mental rehearsals' of how they might act.They also know how to relax and let idea come to them, finding links and connections ; they have a good feeling of 'rightness'.

6 The creativity of imagination needs to yoked to discipline. They have the ability to think carefully, rigorously and methodically. They are good at 'hard thinking' and ask, 'how come'? They are good at creating explanations, making plans, crafting ideas, and making predictions based on their evidence. They are also open to serendipity and to changing their minds if necessary.

7 Powerful learners know the virtue of sociability. They are happy collaborating and sharing their ideas and resources. They are good members of groups able to help groups solve problems. They are able to both give their views, receive feedback, and listen respectfully to others.

8 Powerful learners are reflective. They are able to step back and take stock of progress. They are able to mull over their actions and consider how they might have done things differently. Good learners are self aware, able to contemplate their actions to continually 'grow their learning power'.

Claxton believes that his 'magnificent eight' are both specific enough, and general enough, to cover most of the positive learning behaviours ( 'key competencies') we need to encourage, both as teachers and parents.

They seem to me to be the 'dispositions' that we would want of our teachers as well?

Stanley Avenue's core values- Student voice

I believe one of the most powerful (if not the most powerful) ways to gauge a School's learning environment is through student voice. This week a visiting ERO team worked with a range of our students asking questions about learning, what they enjoyed about School and what the School's values meant to them. Here is a small selection of their feedback:

• “Friends and teachers are always friendly and always there for us”

• “The School is like a big family”

• “Having friends that respect you for who you are”

• “We aren’t afraid to make mistakes because our teachers and classmates don’t pick on us and encourage us to keep trying”

These comments are reflected in the word cloud that I collected by asking the students "What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of Stanley Avenue School?"

Future Thinking...

This morning I finally took the hint that my wife had been trying to get across to me the last few months....Sort through the School stuff in the spare room! Now, being a hoarder by nature the sort turned into a arghhhhhh I remember that book!

An article that I found buried was written by Ian Jukes and is called 'Facing the Future'. It is a very interesting and thought provoking read. He talks about the future for our chlidren. Here is a quick quote that sums up the theme of the article.

"None of the top jobs that will be available in 2020 exist today, and that these jobs are jobs that will require workers to use technology that hasn't been invented yet to solve problems that we haven't even thought out yet"

he goes on to say that "students attending university will find that half or more of what they learned will be obsolete, outdated, or just plain wrong on the day they graduate" He uses the example of Sony.

The production cycle for Sony products is currently 7 days from idea to first prototype. And you think that's fast- Sony regularly replaces their products on a 90 day cycle- 90 days on the market and the product is replaced with a new and improved model. Their motto is 'Today let's put ourselves out of business because if we don't, someone else will'!!

So what does this mean? Or more importantly what does this mean as we at Stanley Avenue look towards forming our curriculum and a picture of our 'leaver'?

-Problem seekers- solvers
-Goal setters- Students 'in charge of their learning'
-Researchers
-Thinkers (know what to do when they don't know what to do!)
-Creative, innovative thinkers
-Empathy, caring (make a positive difference)

Out in the classes!

As part of our ERO visit we have been encouraged to collect feedback of how well the School communicates with it's learning community. Today I popped into five classes (a mixture of junior, middle and senior).

I asked the students to write the first word that came to their mind when they thought about Stanley Ave School. I then recorded some comments about what the School's values mean to them. I will post the whole presentation up shortly.

Nintendo Wii Mote an alternative to an interactive Whiteboard?

I have just read a very interesting article on the possibility of creating an interactive whiteboard for around $50. As you will know Stanley Avenue has two Interactive Whiteboards in the senior classes. These have enhanced motivation and learning in the class. Kevin and Kerry will be sharing there success later this term.

The downside of an IWB is the price....

Looking at this article it seems possible to use a Nintendo Wii remote as an infrared camera. You then only need a projector (which still costs!) and an infrared pen (which I will try and make this weekend). Check out this website. Te Aroha Schools combined Calf Club 2008

I thoroughly enjoyed popping down to the Te Aroha racecourse yesterday to watch the calf club events. Caring for an animal requires hardwork, care and responsibility. It was wonderful to see Stanley Avenue students perform to such a high standard. Next event is the Te Aroha schools group day next week. Good luck for those who are involved and a mooooo and baaaaaaa to the performers......!

Today I am nursing a few sore muscles as a result of being challenged to a game of hockey! A group of keen players joined me on the turf at lunchtime for a hit around. I was very impressed with the commitment and skill shown (and very thankful I had two very fit players on my team). I think this might become a weekly fixture!

Thank you to all those that we able to attend one or both of the events yesterday. It was great to meet so many caring and committed parents and caregivers. My wife and daughter both enjoyed seeing the School that I had spoken so much about!

I spoke briefly yesterday about the exciting times ahead for Stanley Avenue School. Together as a learning community we have the opportunity to create a curriculum that engages, motivates and prepares our students for the 21st century. What a neat way to start the term! Today I was welcomed by the students of Stanley Ave School in a formal assembly. Each class contributed by briefly explaining why Stanley Ave is so special. The year eight leaders ran the assembly wonderfully. One part of the assembly involved a short movie highlighting the activities that have taken place this year. I look forward to sharing future events with the students.

It is with great enthusiasm that I write my first post as principal of Stanley Avenue School. I am looking forward to meeting the staff and students again tomorrow and formally meeting with the community on Wednesday morning and evening. During these times I hope to share with you my background, educational philosophy and vision for Stanley Ave School.

During term four I intend to get into the classrooms as often as possible and meet with students, staff, parents, caregivers, the BOT and other members of the School's learning community. This will enable me to have a clearer understanding of Stanley Ave's strengths and areas for development.
